Snapchat Adds New Generative AI Lenses, Longer Video Uploads and More

Snapchat is introducing several new features aimed at enhancing creativity and connectivity within the app, including new generative AI lenses, longer video uploads, and more.

While these updates may not represent groundbreaking shifts in Snapchat engagement, they offer intriguing tools for future in-app updates.

One notable addition is Snapchat’s introduction of new AI-powered lenses, providing users with increased options for editing and customizing their visuals. These lenses utilize advanced AI technology to enable users to apply various themes to their images with a simple tap.

Snapchat stated, “Lenses have long been a part of our everyday camera experience, and new AI lenses are introducing limitless possibilities. We’ve added a new advanced AI-powered Lens that lets you drop into a festive theme with just a tap, and look out for more themes and styles coming soon.”

This incorporation of generative AI into Snapchat’s lens feature mirrors its existing “My AI” chatbot and is reminiscent of its “Dreams” AI element, which transforms images into imagined landscapes. However, this variation is more seamlessly integrated into the regular Snapchat experience.

In addition to AI lenses, Snapchat is introducing new “Templates” to simplify the creation of highlight videos based on users’ shared memories. This feature allows users to compile snapshots of their memories, set them to music, and create personalized video montages.

Snapchat is also extending its video length limits, enabling users to create longer videos (up to three minutes) and upload longer videos (up to five minutes) for Chats, Stories, and Spotlight. This change is particularly significant for Spotlight, which previously had a 60-second length limit. While Snapchat’s general upload limit has been 60 seconds, some users have reported being able to record longer clips recently.

Additionally, Snapchat is updating its user interface (UI) to make the Snap camera more accessible throughout the app. For Snapchat+ subscribers, new updates include the ability to create combined avatar displays in Friendship Profiles and more realistic Bitmoji depictions of pets. Users can now upload a photo of their pet through Snap Map, and an AI tool will automatically generate a unique avatar that appears alongside them on the Map.

While these updates may not represent major shifts, they expand Snapchat’s creative capabilities and offer added value to users. The extension of video length limits, in particular, could have a significant impact on user behavior, although its adoption remains to be seen.
